Abstract

This work aimed to evaluate the influence of leaf drying methods, collection time and months on the chemical composition and essential oil content of Melaleuca alternifolia plants grown in Viçosa-MG. The antimicrobial activity of the oil was evaluated against micro-organisms of interest for the food industry, using the disc diffusion technique. The oil was extracted by steam distillation during 3 hours. Compound identification was done by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The main compounds identified were terpinen-4-ol (46.38%), 1.8-cineole (3.72%), γ-terpinene (9.74%), α-terpineol (4.35%) and p-cimene (16.52%). Oil content was higher in samples dried in controlled-climate chambers when compared to those dried in an oven. There was a variation in oil content during the months of the year. The antimicrobial activity evaluation revealed the formation of inhibition halos for all the microorganisms.
