Abstract

This study presents several indications of medicinal use of tree species with Potential Value for Sustainable Exploitation (VPES) in the Southern region of Santa Catarina State using popular knowledge and relevant scientific literature. Therefore, all studies in the literature that contained phytosociological data of Dense Ombrophilous Forest remnants were evaluated. The scientific investigation about these tree species were also evaluated by bibliometric analysis in Scopus and Science Direct databases until the end of 2014. Information about 331 trees species was obtained, with 79 species having VPES and, among these, 19 presented medicinal potential value. Among these species, 50% presented high VPES. Allophylus edulis (A.St.-Hil. et al.) Hieron. ex Niederl. had the highest VPES, whereas Casearia sylvestris Sw. presented eight indications of medicinal use, and it is the only species in the List of Medicinal Plants of Interest for the Public Health System (RENISUS). The scientific production about these plant species proved to be promising, mainly for Illex paraguariensis St.-Hill., with 299 indexes.
