Influence of harvest times and drying of leaves on the essential oil of Melissa officinalis L. cultivated in two environments

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of harvest times and drying of leaves on content and chemical composition of essential oil of Melissa officinalis L. cultivated in greenhouse and field. The assay was conducted at the Research Station "Campus Rural da UFS", located at the Sao Cristovao city, Sergipe state, Brazil. M. officinalis was cultivated in using black plastic mulch on beds with dimensions of 1.20 m width. The completely randomized experimental design was used, in a 2x2 factorial scheme for the first trial and 4x2 factorial scheme for the second trial, with six replications. The treatments of the first trial were: two harvest times (9 am. and 3 pm.) and drying of leaves (fresh and dried at 40°C). At the second trial four harvest times (8 am., 11 am., 2 pm. and 5 pm.) and drying of leaves (fresh and dried at 40°C) were tested. Drying leaves of M. officinalis cultivated in greenhouse resulted in essential oil with traces of nerol and geraniol. Harvest times and drying of leaves influenced the chemical composition of the essential oil. Highest essential oil content in M. officinalis cultivated in field conditions was obtained from fresh leaves harvested at 5 p.m..
