Storage, viability and dormancy of seeds from natural population of Cuphea carthagenensis (Jacq.) Macbride

Sete-sangrias (Cuphea carthagenensis - family Lythraceae) is a herb, popularly used in the combat to several diseases such as arteriosclerosis, the arterial hypertension and the palpitations of the heart. Seeds of C. carthagenensis are dormants, due to the thickness of the seed tegument or the presence of substances, which inhibit or delay its germination. Thus, the objective of the work was to evaluate the germination rate and emergency speed index of seeds from three natural populations, treatments for dormancy overcome, and storage conditions. Those seeds from three populations (São Pedro de Alcântara, Concórdia and Florianópolis), previously soaked in distilled water by 10 hours were subjected to three different treatments to break dormancy (control, absolute sulfuric acid and removal of the tegument manually in stereoscope). The high germination rate (up to 80%) of seeds collected three days previously the germination test was obtained with the seed tegument removing. The values for viability of the seeds were specific for each population, and the population of Concórdia provided the largest index of emergency speed (40.5). However, to those seeds stored for one year under environment temperature, the percentage germination were 15% a value four times less than that exhibited by the newly collected seeds.
