Effects of onion (Allium cepa L.) aqueous extract on renal function and arterial pressure in Wistar rats

Abstract

Onion (Allium cepa) has been used in folk medicine for its diuretic properties and for the treatment of bronchitis, cough and cardiovascular diseases, as hypertension. This work was carried out to study the effects of onion aqueous extract (AE) on the water and electrolytes renal excretion in Wistar anesthetized rats. Parallelly, the arterial pressure (AP) was evaluated. Two groups were studied: Group 1 (control) – received 1 mL of distilled water (v.o.) and Group 2 (experimental) – received 1 mL of 20% onion AE (v.o.). The rats were anesthetized and then the trachea, left carotid artery and jugular vein were cannulated. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) did not significantly change in both groups. The AE onion treatment increased the urinary flow (V) and the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) significantly, but the fractional sodium (FENa⁺) and potassium (FEK⁺) excretion remained constant. We concluded that 20% onion AE has a diuretic effect related to changes in renal hemodynamics, without any effect on the arterial pressure.
