This study aimed to analyze and evaluate the quality of products made from erva-doce (Pimpinella anisum L.), quebra-pedra (Phyllanthus spp.), espinheira santa (Maytenus ilicifolia Mart.), and chamomile (Matricaria recutita L.), sold in commercial pharmacies of the city of Recife. The packaging was observed and compared to resolution RDC nº 48 of march 16, 2004. Sensorial properties, macroscopic and microscopic botanical characteristics, percentage of foreign matter, humidity ratio, and phytochemical composition of the extracts from each sample were also analyzed. Only 32 of the samples were accompanied by instructions and most were not in accordance with the legislation in force. The microscopic analysis indicated that five samples of erva-doce were composed of Pimpinella anisum L. fruit and two by Foeniculum vulgare Miller; the remaining sample contained fruit of both species. This analysis also showed that six samples of quebra-pedra were composed of Phyllanthus tenellus Roxb. and one of Phyllanthus amarus Schumach., differently from what was listed on the package (Phyllanthus niruri L.). From the six samples of espinheira santa, one was composed of leaves of Maytenus ilicifolia Reiss. In 21 of the 32 samples, foreign matter percentages were higher than that permitted by law. High humidity levels were recorded in three of the samples of erva-doce and in all of the samples of chamomila and espinheira-santa.
