The chemical composition, the botanical characteristics and the biological activities attributed to the genus Ottonia (Piperaceae) were revised. A survey of the available literature shows that these species are popularly used as diuretic, aphrodisiac, diaphoretic, hallucinogenic and in toothaches treatments, snakes-bite and mushrooms intoxication. The microbiological activity and the local anesthetic effect were found in studies using some Ottonia species. Generally, the amides piperlonguminine and piperovatine, substances found in roots and aerial parts, are assumed to be the active principles. Therefore, the meaning of a scientific survey on information about the species of this genus was detached.
