Abstract

Evidence of the inhibitory action on Candida yeasts by substances that present low or none toxicity to humans, especially substances extracted from plants already used in popular medicine, has been the intention of many researches. The objective of the present work was to determine the in vitro inhibitory activity of extracts of Arrabidaea chica on C. albicans and quantify the number of components present in the extracts. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts, autoclaved and filtered, was determined by agar dilution on twenty-five strains of C. albicans and the separation of extract components (solid-aqueous mixing), by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Both the autoclaved hydroalcoholic extract and the filtrated one inhibited all C. albicans strains, in the concentration of 20%. The autoclaved aqueous extract inhibited 84% of the strains at the concentration of 30% while the filtrated didn’t showed inhibitory effect up to a concentration of 50%. The TLC of the autoclaved hydroalcoholic extract evidenced the presence of seven components and the autoclaved aqueous one, two. The hydroalcoholic and aqueous extracts of A. chica presented inhibitory activity on C. albicans, however the hydroalcoholic extract showed superior performance and greater number of components.
