Hyperium brasiliense has been used popularly as medicinal plant, showing inhibitory activity of monoamino oxidase (MAO) and antimicrobial action assured in vitro. The present work aimed to describe internal and external morphology of H. brasiliense, to serve as an instrument for the identification of this plant. Plants were harvested in Camanducaia (São Paulo) and Nova Friburgo (Rio de Janeiro) cities. Blades for the anatomical study were prepared according to the following procedure: free hand cuttings of stems and leaves were obtained using razor blades prior to the staining. Maceration technique was used for visualization of the epidermis, and histochemical tests were carried through to detect olls, lignin and cellulose. The set of external and internal morphological characteristics makes possible the recognition of H. brasiliense: quadrangular stem; lanceolate, sessile and hypostomatic leaves, hemiparacytic stomata; yellowish coloured secretory cavities in leaves; flowers in cyme, stamens numerous, ovary with five carpels, parietal placentation and five styles.
