Conservation of ipecac (Psychotria ipecacuanha Standl): 1- localization strategies of populations and ethnobotany

Ipecac (Psychotria ipecacuanha Standl.) is a Brazilian medicinal species known to present important pharmacological properties: amebicide, emetic and expectorant. The species suffered intense extractivism (root harvesting) and reduction of its habitat. Thus, the present work aimed to evaluate the three localization strategies of Mata Atlantica populations in the states of Minas Gerais (MG) Espirito Santo (ES), Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Bahia (BA), as well as to survey cultural and ethnobotanic aspects of the species. The species localization strategies were based on popular information - PL; localization herbarium referred-HR, and randomic localization-RL. Among the population localization strategies, the most successful was that based on popular information. 13 populations were located in a total of 26 accessions (1-3 accessions per population).
