Abstract

This study aimed to identify the chemical composition of essential oil of rosemary grown in different periods of salinity and its antiproliferative and genotoxic effect on the genetic material of Allium cepa. Plants were grown in polyethylene under the Department of Plant Science the Federal University of Santa Maria, in different periods of salinity. In the control (T1) was used an electric conductivity of 1.0 dS/m and the other four treatments the electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution was 5.0 dS/m. T2 plants were submitted to the salt solution for a period of 50 days, at T3 for a period of 40 days, in T4 and T5 for periods of 30 and 20 days, respectively. All plants were collected on December 12, 2014, 190 days after planting (DAP). The Extraction of oil from the leaf by hydrodistillation in Clevenger was performed and then performed gas chromatography. The essential oils were evaluated for antiproliferative and genotoxic effects at A. cepa cells at a concentration of 0.20%. Was used four A. cepa. bulbs per treatment. The preparations the blades were made by of the crushing technique and stained with 2% acetic orcein. The data were submitted to the test Sott-Knott (p <0.05). The majority compounds of the essential oil were camphor, 1.8 cineol, verbenone, α-pinene, and β-myrcene. This oil in turn was not genotoxic and not showed significant antiproliferative effect, except than that was obtained from the plants have remained for a longer period under saline conditions which inhibit cell division, and may thereby increase interest for the production of pharmaceuticals.
