Toxicological evaluation of Helianthemum glomeratum extracts using Ames Test

The Ames Test ("Samonella/microssome assay") was used to evaluate five different extracts of Halianthemum glomeratum, (Halimium 1, Halimium 2, Halimium 3, Halimium 4 e Halimium 5), a plant widely used by the Maya communities in Southern Mexico to treat gastrointestinal disorders, with or without addition of metabolic activation system. It was observed the absence of mutagenic potential in all tested extracts and it was detected an antimutagenic activity for Halimium 2, Halimium 4 and Halimium 5 extracts in all strains, for Halimium 3 in the TA97 strain and for Halimium 1 in TA97, TA98 and TA102 strains. In the antimutagenic action the extracts either blocked the positive mutagenic action (TA98 and TA100, 2-aminoantracene; TA97, 2-aminofluorene and TA102, benzo-(a)-pirene) or got together to form a compound less quimically toxic for the cells. It was detected in. TA98 and TA100 strains, for Halimium 3 extract a synergistic effect, in which the extract along with the positive mutagenic, 2-aminoantracene, increased the mutagenesis. In the analysis for antimutagenic effect for Halimium 1 in the TA100 strain, it was detected a toxic synergistic effect, indicating that the extract, along with the mutagenic 2-aminoantracene caused cellular death, which was not observed in the treatment of both separately.
