Abstract

In the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), the use of medicinal plants is particularly common in rural areas, where the primary health care is particularly inadequate. A remarkable grass root oriented health movement known as "Farmácias Caseiras Comunitárias" (FCC, "Community home pharmacies") is supported by the Rural Female Workers Movement as much as NGOs associated to the Catholic Church. This study reports an ethnopharmacological appraisal of remedies prepared in Solidão FCC, in the city of Maquiné. The elixir and tinctures for treating conditions likely to be associated to microorganisms were evaluated against seven microorganisms using the diffusion agar test. This screening revealed that these formulations were devoid of in vitro activity, at least against seven common pathogens. As a means of benefit sharing the selected species were thoroughly reviewed in the appropriate scientific literature, in order to attain a therapeutic/toxic categorization.
