We report in this paper the use of participatory techniques (participant observation, semi-structured interviews and PRA) in obtaining local perception about the use, management and distribution of two medicinal species (Uncaria tomentosa and U. guianensis-"cat's claw") in the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve (AM/Brazil), aiming to catch more locally fitted information to drive future commercial use, conservation and ge m plasm characterization and collection to this region. The method we presented here agreed with other quantitative, less subjective studies in different regions of the Amazon, leading to (1) identify two possible different local populations (one wild on the floodplains and the other under human promotion on unflooded landscapes) for both species at Mamirauá to be considered in the strategies for germ plasm collection in this region. Though literature revision, we also hypothesize about (2) the possible existence of two centers of diversity - one major in NW Amazon and one secondary in the middle Solimões. We suggest that the folk knowledge presented in this paper to be used in future management plan aiming to develop economic use of these species by the local communities.
