Repair of skin wounds of rats treated with a homemade salve of medicinal plants

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a homemade salve made of lard, medicinal plants, and propolis on wounds of rats. The use of this preparation is common in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, as people claim that it has favorable effects on several kinds of skin lesions. Wistar rats were separated in two groups and a surgical wound was made on their back. Twice a day, one group was treated with the homemade salve and the other one with the lard. The morphology and bacterial contamination of the wounds were analyzed on 3rd, 7th, 10th, and 15th days after surgery. The microbiological aspects and the wound reductions were not significantly different between the groups, but the group treated with lard showed better reepitelization at the end of the experiment. Based on the obtained results, it is possible to conclude that the salve could have delayed the reepitelization. Therefore, the mixture of all these medicinal plants in the salve can impair their individual effect on repair. In addition, the excessive boiling in the preparation of the salve could also have destroyed several therapeutical substances contained in the plants.
