Anacardic Acids are the main phenolic compounds of the cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), being also present, in small amounts in the cashew apples (pseudo-fruits). Although causing human skin irritation in concentrations over 5%, their pharmacological properties have been emphasised in recent papers. The aim of the present work was to obtain the total anacardic acids from natural CNSL, to standardise the analytical methodology for these compounds in cashew apples and to analyse the amount of anacardic acids in apples of 3 dwarf cashew clones. Total anacardic acids were purified in silica gel/citric acid chromatographic column (95:5). Their analytical extractions from cashew apples were based on Bligh-Dyer extraction, with modifications. The extract was purified in silica gel mini-column and quantified in the ultraviolet. The linear range was between 20 and 160 ug/mL of total anacardic acid in hexane. Repeatability was less than 5% and recovery was between 94 and 105%. Anacardic acid contents present in cashew apples ranged from 16.5 to 30.4 mg/100g.
