Ethnopharmacological studies cover 10% of the Psychotria species known, and were carried out with plants of different geographic origins, showing that they are used in traditional medicine for a great diversity of therapeutic indications, including treatment of earache and for calming abdominal pain. In this study of the genus Psychotria with regard to its phyto-chemical aspects and biological activity, alkaloid extracts of various species of Psychotria (P. pupigera, P. nuda, and P. myriantha) were evaluated for analgesia with the hot plate model. The only extract presenting analgesic activity was that of P. myriantha Müell. Arg., at the dose of 200mg/kg. The alkaloid extracts from P. pupigera were highly toxic, with 100% lethality with doses of 50 and 150 mg/kg. These data are interesting because they suggest strong biological activity, indicating the convenience of isolating the compounds for better evaluation of its pharmacological profile. The data are discussed in the context of associating the ethno-pharmacology and the chemo-taxonomy in the search for new analgesics.
