The molluscicidal activity of the crude ethanol extract of the fruits of C. baccatum was tested on Biomphalaria glabrata (F1) and Biomphalana tenagophila (F1). The methodology suggested by the World Health Organization for researches on molluscicidal substances was used. The crude ethanol extract (CEE) from whole fruits of C. baccatum was obtained by ecstatic maceration and the treatments were composed with aqueous emulsions of CEE in concentrations of 0.5, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1 and 0.05 mg/ml. Five repetitions of each treatment were performed, each one constituted of five individuals with 1 cm of shell diameter. Distilled water and aqueous solution of saponin MERCK® (0.5 mg/ml) were used as controls. After 24 hours of treatment, there was observed 100%, 84%. 56%, 16% and 0% of average indices of mortality for the concentrations of 0.5, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1 and 0.05 mg/ml, respectively, for B. glabrata. Significant toxic activity of this extract on B. tenagophila was not observed.
