Self-medication using medicinal plants may replace therapies in severe pathologies, such as hypoglycemia or diabetes. The aim of this paper was to characterize the influence of the treatment with solution (0.10%) of sapogenin, obtained from Eugenia jambolana seeds (jaman), on glycemic control of the streptozotocin-diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in female Wistar rats (n=36) using streptozotocin in a dose of 40 mg/kg dissolved in a citrate buffer. The diabetic state was confirmed when the blood glucose levels exceeded 200 mg/dL, and it was characterized as experimental day 0. The female rats were randomly assigned to 3 experimental groups: diabetic non-treated (n=11); non-diabetic (n=12) and diabetic (n=13) treated with solution of sapogenin (0.10%) obtained from Eugenia jambolana seeds. The test material was orally administered in the tap water. The initial dose of 6 mL of solution of the sapogenin/L of distilled water was given until the 9th day of experiment. The dose was increased to 12 mL/L from day 10 to day 16 of experiment. Distilled water was given to the non-treated group. On the 16th day, the rats were killed by decapitation. The streptozotocm-diabetic rats presented hyperglycemia, polyphagia, polydipsia and polyuria. The treatment with the test material did not interfere with the glycemic levels, excessive thirst and hunger of the streptozotocm-diabetic rats. Thus, the treatment with solution of sapogenin (0.10%). obtained from Eugenia jambolana seeds, did not present hypoglycemic effect in diabetic female rats
