Abstract

The effect of semi-decomposed chicken manure (2 kg/m2) on the yield of Iresh and dry matter of Mentha cf. longifolia and Mentha x villosa was studied under environmental conditions at the Vegetable Garden of Medicinal Plants of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul in Dourados-MS from August, 1999, to January, 2000. Two cuttings of plants (stems and leaves) was done at soil level at 77 and 144 days after planting. Those parts were weighed, dried in a forced-draught oven al 36 ± 40 °C to obtain dry matter. The results showed that among the two species, Mentha cf. longifolia produced a greater quantity of fresh (8.325 and 14.725t/ha) and dry matter shoots (1.685 and 3.720t/ha) in first and second cuttings, respectively. The use of chicken manure promoted more fresh mint and dry matter production at 77 days after planting. For Mentha cf. longifolia and Mentha x vilosa can be recommended the cutting of shoots from certain period after planting al regular intervals in order to obtain more productivity.
