Physical-chemical characterization of some species of medicinal plants

Ocimum gratissimum L., Phylanthus amarus Schumet et Thorn, Sambucus australis Cham. & Schlecht, Eucatypitus tereticornis Smith, and Spondias aff. tuberosa are plants which ofter recognized therapeutic action in popular medicinal practice. Due to lack of information in literature, mainly regarding inorganic composition of these plants and also the importance of studying with details these species in order to produce phyto-therapeutic medicines, the following analyses were earned out: moisture, ash, silica, fiber, fat, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Al. Different methods of analyses, such as, gravimetry, atomic and molecular absorption spectrometry and flame photometry, were employed in order to determine the inorganic composition regarding the importance of studying with details those species to produce medicaments. High levels of ash and low amounts of silica were found in agreement with minerals present in those vegetables. Ocimum gratissimum L., Eucatypitus tereticornis Smith and Spondias aff. tuberosa have showed higher levels of Ca when compared to daily requirements. All studied species presented high fiber content.
