Effect of Persea cordata Mez (Lauraceae) barks pomatum on guinea pig surgical wound healing

Persea cordata, known in the South of Brazil as Pau-andrade, has been popularly used for healing wounds. Previous works attest to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic effects. In this study we evaluated the healing effect of pomatum from P. cordata bark (10% in Vaseline/lanoline), for topical use. Ten guinea pigs (500-600 g) were inflicted with two surgical wounds in the back where 2 cm diameter skin and subcutaneous tissue was removed. The animals were treated with the pomatum and lanolin and/or merbromin for 15 consecutive days. The wound borders were measured every three days. The wounds treated with P. cordata had a cicatricial evolution, on the average significantly faster (P <0,05) than those treated with merbromin. Altogether these results allow us to conclude that the P. cordata pomatum used in this study, had a positive modulator effect on the evolution of the granulation tissue, facilitating the reeptelization process; if also reduced the mobilization time of wounds in the initial level of the cicatricial process thus validating popular knowledge.
