Screening of flavonoids on a germplasm bank of espinheira-santa (Maytenus aquifolium Mart).

Maytenus aquifolium is a native medicinal specie at Telêmaco Borba, Pr, In this region the species shows genetic variability from medium to high. The objective of this study was the preliminary investigation of the levels of rutin, quercetin and kaempferol in Maytenus aquifolium matrices stored in the native germplasm bank at Telêmaco Borba-PR by high resolution chromatographic method (HPLC). The chemical variability of Maytenus aquifolium Mart. (Celastraceae), a Brazilian medicinal plant known as "espinheira santa", was investigated on specimens native at Telemaco Borba-PR, Brazil, at the 2011. The content of flavonoids rutin and kaempferol varied from 1.884 ± 0.003 to 287.958 ± 1.244 mg/g dried leaves. The content of flavonoids quercetin varied from 1.795 ± 0.03 to 3.778 ± 0.07 mg/g dried leaves. The content of flavonoids kaempferol varied from 0.157 ± 0.003 to 1.114 ± 0.035 mg/g dried leaves. The information on the levels of rutin, quercetin and kaempferol obtained from leaves of the species were statistically significant and indicated the need for further studies on this native species at Telêmaco Borba-PR.
